What is a print?
Artists have incorporated printmaking into their practice since the fifth century. Many art masters have created prints, including such household names as Albrecht Dürer, Francisco Goya, Pablo Picasso, Robert Rauschenberg, Elizabeth Catlett, Andy Warhol, Banksy, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Takashi Murakami, and Robert Blackburn.
Printmaking is a labor-intensive and highly technical form of art. The process is based on the principle of transferring images from one surface (of metal, stone, wood, polymer, or screen), called the matrix, onto another surface, most often paper or fabric. The infinite variations of ink, pressure, time, and surface can alter the outcome and quality of the print and create infinitely unique works.
Why collect prints?
Over the last decade, prints have continued to rise in value and gain increased demand on the market, establishing prints, multiples, and editions as a genre worth collecting. Prints are a great way to start your art collection because they are often more affordable, accessible, and easy to store and display.
