Devyn Leonor Briggs
Devyn Briggs was raised in Bethlehem, PA. Briggs' work is deeply inspired by her mixed Colombian, Jamaican, and African American heritage. She seeks to answer her questions about the complexities of multiculturalism, spirituality, personal mythology, and the deeply rooted longing for ancestral land through her work. Her use of abstraction captures the aesthetic structures of society, reflecting on subjects of culture, community, family, and stories of faith to create a visual vocabulary about her personal experiences.
“I filter through the cultural artifacts of my heritage to gather the raw materials of color, texture, pattern, and rhythm that resonate incessantly in my mind. Only then can I unceremoniously cut them up and rearrange them into a visual language that strains to translate and explain the origin of that aesthetic impulse.” - Devyn Briggs
